Incorporated by act of 24 July 1888 to take over and exercise, by agreement with the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, the powers conferred upon that Board by the Overhead Railway Acts of 1882 and 1887. Line opened for traffic on 6 March 1893. It remained independent until its closure in 1956.
