Incorporated by act of 7th August 1862. South Yorkshire, and Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway companies each appointed two Directors. Under act of 28th June 1866, company was transferred jointly to Great Northern, and Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway companies, West Riding and Grimsby Railway to become extinct within one year from passing of act. Company was vested in Great Northern, and Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway companies by further Act of 1867, and ceased to exist as independent undertaking on 28th June 1867. Line was managed by Joint Committee of three Directors from each of companies to which West Riding and Grimsby Railway Company was transferred.
Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company changed its name to Great Central Railway Company under act of 1897 and Great Northern, and Great Central railway companies became part of London and North Eastern Railway Company from 1st January 1923 under North Eastern, Eastern, and East Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922.
