Incorporated under act of 14th August 1855. Undertaking was leased to London & South Western Railway Company for 999 years in 1872, but was purchased by and became absolute property of London & South Western Railway Company as from 17th June 1875. Railway and pier were however sold to Admiralty on 3rd March 1922.
