Incorporated under act of 22nd July 1861. Undertaking was absolutely transferred to and vested in Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire, and Great Northern railway companies under Cheshire Lines Transfer Act 5th July 1865, management being vested in Committee to be called Cheshire Lines Committee consisting of 8 persons, 4 being nominated by each company.

Under Section 43 of act, Midland Railway Company was to be admitted to ownership of Stockport, Timperley and Altrincham Junction undertaking under conditions therein set forth, and Cheshire Lines Committee thereafter consisted of 9 persons of whom 3 persons were nominated by each of the three companies in whom undertaking had been vested.

By virtue of Cheshire Lines Act 15th August 1867, Cheshire Lines Committee was incorporated. This undertaking was left out of grouping authorised by Railways Act of 1921 and continued as separate company managed by joint committee of 6 representatives of London and North Eastern Railway and 3 representatives of London Midland and Scottish Railway, with authorised capital in proportion of two thirds by London and North Eastern Railway and one third by London Midland and Scottish Railway. Cheshire Lines Committee passed to British Transport Commission under Transport Act of 1947.
