Prefix B was used by the Department of Energy (DoEn) Electricity Division prior to its absorption into the DTI. This division was transferred to the DTI's Electricity Division (EL). The Division's main responsibilities included developing and implementing energy policy in England and Wales, and in the EC context, as well as the environmental, technical and safety issues relating to the energy industry. The EL Division had responsibility for the Energy sector, ie Coal, Electricity, Atomic Energy, Oil and Gas, International Energy and Offshore Supplies.
