Description

Folios 291-294: Francis Pickmore, Deal. Reports that he arrived here today having been a passenger in HMS Ramillies from Barbados, & from the Command of which Ship he was dispossessed by the Honourable Rear Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane on 13 July 1808; As he thinks the manner in which he has been treated by the Rear Admiral , he intended him a serious injury, and that it was unjust oppressive and contrary to the practice of the service. [Total of five sides - details of the situation].

Folios 295-296: Enclosures with folios 291-294: Rear Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane, HMS Belleisle. Carlisle Bay. Barbados. To Francis Pickmore, Rear Admiral of the Blue (on board HMS Ramillies), Dated 13 July 1808. (No 1). States as His Majesty has been pleased to Promote you to the Rank of Rear Admiral of the Blue Squadron. He has thought it proper to appoint Captain Robert Yarker from HMS Julia to be Captain of HMS Ramillies. As it is his intention to send HMS Ramillies to England with the ensuing Convoy, Captain Robert Yarker shall have his direction to rece4ive you and your Retinue onboard for a passage to England should you desire it.

Folios 297-298: Enclosures with folios 291-294: Francis Pickmore, HMS Ramillies, Carlisle Bay. Barbados. To Rear Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane, HMS Belleisle. Dated 13 July 1808. (No 2). Reply to letter dated 13 July 1808. States because he has not received an official communication from the Admiralty that he is promoted to be a Flag Officer and also not being informed by their Lordships that they have directed him to be superseded by another Captain, he does not think himself sufficiently authoriser to give up the Command of HMS Ramillies.

Folios 299-300: enclosure with folios 291-294. Letter dated 13 July 1808 by Rear Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane, HMS Belleisle, Carlisle Bay. Barbados, to Francis Pickmore, HMS Ramillies. Dated 13 July 1808. (No 3). Reply to your letter that you do not think yourself sufficiently authoriser to give up the Command of HMS Ramillies. He informs that the Admiralty never communicates with Junior Officers but through the Commander in Chief. You will give up Command of HMS Ramillies to Captain Robert Yarker.

Folios 301-302: enclosure with folios 291-294. Letter dated 13 July 1808 by Francis Pickmore, HMS Ramillies, Carlisle Bay. Barbados, to Rear Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane, HMS Belleisle. (No 4). Reply to letter with the explanation of why he is removed from the Command of HMS Ramillies. [Total of two sides. Ends:-] He cannot but suppose it to be their Lordships intention (unless you acquaint him to the contrary) that he should yet remain in Command of HMS Ramillies; He begs you will please consider this letter in no other light than as a respectful representation agreeably to the 8th Article of Naval Instructions.

Folios 303-304: enclosure with folios 291-294. Letter dated 13 July 1808 by Rear Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane, HMS Belleisle, Carlisle Bay. Barbados, to Francis Pickmore, HMS Ramillies. (No 5). Reply to second letter. He has sufficient authority for appointing Captain Robert Yarker to the Captain of HMS Ramillies - a situation you can no longer hold - from your Rank of Rear Admiral.He therefore trust you will see the propriety of obeying his orders; And he must beg to decline any further discussion on the subject.
