Description

Folios 201-202: Charles Pelly, Crayford, Kent. Covering letter for the enclosed letter from Mr Edward Andrews who was Purser of HMS Mercury during the time he commanded her and was dismissed from his situation in her by the sentence of a Court Martial in June 1807 for neglecting to keep up his Books & Accounts by which the service was delayed. As he felt it a duty incumbent on him to request his conduct to be enquired into so he fells it (and a Justice to the individual) to send his letter and beg you will lay it before their Lordships and state to them that he found him well qualified to fill the situation with credit to himself and benefit to the service and in general a deserving Character should their Lordships be pleased to remit further punishment he hope and trust what he has suffered will in future prompt him to use every diligence].

Folios 203-204: enclosure with folios 201-202. Letter dated 4 November 1808 by Edward Andrews, Grotto, Cannon Street, Borough, Southwark, to Charles Pelly, Crayford, Kent. States having finally passed his Accounts for HMS Mercury for the time you Commanded her, and having made repeated application to the Admiralty for reinstatement, but sorry to say without effect, and which he understand will be the case, unless you will be pleased to favour him, with your interference, having been totally unemployed since the unfortunate event took place, which has nearly exhausted the small sum, He has realised during the period he had the honour of being a Purser, and having devoted so many years in the Service as Clerk and Purser.
