Description

Folios 196A-196B: Shuldham Peard, [Sea Fencibles], Fowey. States he has again had John Stephens before him and questioned him as to the difference which exists in his statement of service and the Certificate from then Navy Office, enclosed with your letter which he returns [not present]. John Stephens has no Certificate but for HMS Canada and with respect to the other ships he speaks from imperfect recollection, He says he in HMS Dublin as a Royal Marine, he thinks about five years, when he was discharged from that ship and from the Royal Marine Corps; that during the American war he was pressed; and served in the Fanny Tender about six years; that in HMS Standard and HMS Culloden he was John Stephens (2) and as his Son was in there two Ships with him he supposes that his Son's time may have been taken instead of his own. As to how he came to state his service to be nearly forty years? He said he meant to express the time from his first entering into the service to the time of his being invalided, and he had no intention to attempt to deceive their Lordships.
