Folios 481-482: Home Riggs Popham, Portsmouth. On his arrival he received a letter of which he gives an exact copy. The letter is dated 4 March 1807 from Mr Greetham Junr, Deputy Judge Advocate of the Fleet. It encloses a copy of the order addressed to Admiral Young to assemble a Court Martial to enquire into his conduct and try him for the offences. Asks for a list of defence witnesses and asks when he will be ready to meet his trial. The order which accompanied this letter dated 2 [March 1807] contained new material which had not been included in the order orignally given him. On 23 [February 1807] he had written to ask whether any further documents were to be read in evidence. By the long delay in forwarding the order no summonses for his witnesses could be obtained from the Judge Advocate until today. He has replied to Mr Greetham that given the late communication he cannot say until his legal adviser arrives when he can be ready. It is absolutely necessary for his defence to have his [William Marsden's] personal attendance at the Court Martial and he has asked the Judge Advocate ot summon him. Asks him to bring with him the trial of Captain Edward Thompson of HMS Hyaena with whom he was Midshipman for 3 years This took place in Portsmouth in March 1782.
