Description

Folios 435-436: John Phillimore, HMS Bellette, Gottenburgh Harbour. In compliance with Captain Fraser's orde,r of which he sends a copy, he proceeded to Maloe Sound and sent over land to Kingsbacka. Finding the transports not there, he proceeded to Gottenburgh on 3 [December 1807] . They discovered 2 foreign vessels en route. Describes how he managed to evade them. They arrived there on 4 [December 1807]. He learns from Lord Hutchinson that they were Danish battle ships from Frederickshall. He found HMS Amaranthe there who sails with the Leith convoy today and HMS Constant waiting for a convoy to England. He will detain her until the merchant vessels are ready. Mr Smith the Consul tells him there are about 27 merchant vessels which will be ready to sail within the week. Lord Hutchinson intends to take a passage to England in HMS Bellette.

Folio 437: enclosure with folios 435-436. Order dated 30 November 1807 from Alexander Fraser, Captain of HMS Vanguard and Senior Officer in the Sound, given on board HMS Vanguard off the Koll, to John Phillimore, HMS Bellette. Orders him to proceed into Kingsbucka and take under convoy the Phoenix, Ann, Friends, Good Intent and St Thomas transports if he finds them there and proceed with them to the Downs. If the transports have sailed he is to proceed to Gottenburgh and take under his convoy any homeward bound trade to Yarmouth Roads and report to eh Admiralty.
