Description

Folios 414-415: John Phillimore, HMS Bellette, distance given from Southwould church and North Dunwich church. He wished to lose no time in landing Lieutenant Bredersee, a Prussian Officer from Colbourg with dispatches for Mr Canning and the Prussian Minister and in forwarding some public letters from Lord Gower to Mr Hammond. It was fine weather. He anchored there and learned form people who had been at Dunwich harbour that a boat might get out at any time so he ventured to send the jolly boat with the Prussian Officer, Mr Kennedy, Master's Mate and Mr Perks, Midshipman to the harbour. He is sorry to say that after the boat had put off the wind and sea got up and they lost sight of the boat close to the harbour. Captain Tinling of the Sea Fencibles has just sent him the sad news that the jolly boat upset. The Master's Mate, one man, and the public letters were saved, but Lieutenant Bredersee who had the dispatches on him is lost. The Commandant of Colbourg had sent Lieutenant Friedrich Bredersee to England to ask for help in obtaining guns and ammunition and the thank his Majesty and governmnet for the supplies he has already received.
