Description

Folios 384-385: Robert Pettet, HMS Termagant, Chatham. Sends a letter received today from William Twynan, Purser. Recommends him as worthy of the promotion he seeks.

Folios 386-387: enclosure with folios 384-385. Letter dated 16 January 1807 from William Twynan, HMS Termagant, Chatham to Robert Pettet, HMS Termagant. He was appointed Purser of HMS Experiment in July 1801 in Egypt and superceded by Lord Keith to his office in January [1802] and then to HMS Strombolo in March 1802. He was appointed to HMS Childers in August 1803. In February 1805 Lord Nelson promoted him to HMS Amphitrite captured by HMS Donegal; but HMS Childers was cruising off the Western Islands at the time and so he could not benefit from his Lordship's goodness. In December [1805] he was induced to exchange into HMS Termagant as HMS Childers was under orders for England, in the hope of promotion from the captured ships off Trafalgar, which in the event of an action Lord Nelson had promised him he would obtain, having lost HMS Amphitirte. Asks for an appointment in another rate when a vaacany arises.
