Folios 353-354: Francis Pender, HMS Queen, off Cadiz. He has been in the service for 43 years, for 27 of which he has had a command and has been chiefly abroad which has much impaired his health. His present indisposition is from the effects of a slow fever with which many of the ship's Officers and company were afflicted last summer, and many died or were invalided. The opinions of the Faculty are that a short time in his native country would be the most probable means of a prefect recovery. He is now Senior Captain of HM ships afloat and would be reluctant to give up his ship whilst there is a probability of his recovery. Asks for leave of absence to return to England for a short time. Lord Collingwood knows about his ill helth and has promised to accompany this letter with one from himself.
