Description

Folios 243-244: Joseph Pearce, HMS Vulture, Little Nore. States reasons why he reported Caleb Breese, a Supernumerary on board HMS Vulture, as a Volunteer. He was sent to HMS Vulture from HMS Zealand at the Nore on 26 August [1807] as Volunteer, as previously stated in his letters of 8 and 20 [October 1807]. Refers them to Captain Jones of HMS Namur who commanded HMS Zealand at the time and to which Caleb Breese now belongs as he was only lent to HMS Vulture.

Folios 245-246: enclosure with folios 243-244. Letter dated 7 October 1807 from John Breese, Lynn, to W Welleseley Pole. Receipt of letters informing him his son Caleb Breese would be discharged from HMS Vulture provided he had not voluntarily entered and then another reporting that Captain Pearce of HMS Vulture said that he had volunteered, and therefore he could not be discharged. He has subsequently received a ltter from his son which he encloses. A relative has been on board HMS Vulture and confirms his account of not having entered. He assures him that he will never voluntarily enter into a service to which he was not brought up and for which he is in no way qualified.

Folio 246: enclosure with folios 245-246. Letter dated 18 September 1807 from C[aleb] B[reese] to John Breese, Friars Lane, South Lynn, Norfolk. Today he received a letter from his uncle which says he [his father] had received a letter from the Admiralty that he had entered but he has not and will not. He hopes he will write again and let them know. There were 10 of them pressed out of different ships and they put them down as entered but none of them have.
