Folios 158-159: Richard Poulden, Regulating Officer, Whitby Rendezvous. Reports that the Apprentices James Laurenston and Hugh Sinclair were impressed for the reasons stated in Mr. Scoresby's memorial. Also advises that the law relating to the Davis Streights Fishery does not mention the protection of Apprentices beyond the usual time of 18 years of age and 3 years at sea (as is the case in the Act of George III, Cap 15 instituted for better supplying the Cities of London and Westminster with fish, wherein it allows Apprentices to be 20 years of age. advises that Hugh Sinclair is upwards of 20 years of age and called a Fisherman when he was bound and had served 4 1/2 years when impressed.
Folios 160-161: enclosed with folios 158-159. Letter dated 12 January 1805 by William Scoresby, Whitby to the Admiralty. Advises that on 15 December 1804 James Laurenston, his apprentice bound to serve on board the Resolution of which he is part owner in the Greenland Whale Fishery, was impressed by people under orders of Captain Poulden, Regulating Officer, Whitby. Also Hugh Sinclair another of his Apprentices belonging to the same vessel was impressed in September 1804. Advises that the reason for impressing them was that they had been at sea for 3 years and were 18 years of age. Comments on the different situation of Apprentices to ships employed in the Greenland Fishery and those belonging to Merchant Ships. Refers to a Memorial by Joseph Egginton of Hull to the Admiralty about one of his Greenland Whale Fishery Apprentices impressed under the same circumstances as his and that the Admiralty at that time considered them to be exempted from the impress. Asks for the discharge of James Laurenston and Hugh Sinclair. Transcript of a Memorial of Joseph Egginton, Hull, dated 17 October 1797 asking for the discharge of Stephen Younger, Apprentice who was impressed by an Officer belonging to HMS Furnace. Transcript of a Letter dated 2 November 1797 by William Marsden, Admiralty Office to Joseph Egginton advising that the Admiralty has given orders for the discharge of Stephen Younger being an Apprentice employed in the Greenland Whale Fishery.
