Description

Folios 207-208: d'Arcy Preston, Regulating Captain, Whitby. Lengthy reply to letter 20 October concerning Joseph Holly's letter and affidavit about the Trial Revenue cutters crew. Reports Holly complained about having to join the Impress service and wanted to be discharged so he impressed them to prevent them being lost to the service. Includes copies of letters from the Custom House.

Folios 209-210: enclosed in folios 207-208. Letter dated 18 October 1803 by Joseph Holly, HMS Sophie, Portsmouth. Encloses his brother's affidavit sent on Admiral Holloway's orders for the Trial Revenue cutters crew.

Folios 211-212: enclosed in folios 207-208. Affidavit dated 13 October 1803 by John Holly, Trial Revenue Cutter, Whitby, sworn before Moorsom and Harding plus nine signatories. Agreed to assist Captain Poulden of Navy Impress service on orders 19 May. Ordered by Captain Poulden 24 May to deliver dispatches to HMS Mermaid cutter off Whitby which he gave to Lieutenant Wallis who on reading them promptly impressed him and his eight man crew. Asked why and was told it was doubted the Trial would assist the Impress Service. This he says is groundless.
