Folios 402-403: William Pierrepont, Liverpool. Refers to Admiralty letter of 3 December which informed him that it was considered that the four large gun vessels now fitting for the defence of the coast and port of Liverpool, were in the charge of the Corporation until they were required for service. Reported this to the Mayor and encloses his reply.
Folios 404-405: enclosure with folios 402-403. Letter dated 10 December 1803 from William Harper, Mayor, Liverpool to Captain Pierrepont. States that he put Captain Pierrepont's letter of 9 December and Sir Evan Nepean's letter of 3 December before the Committee of Defence. The Committee have asked him to inform Captain Pierrepont that they always understood that when the vessels were fitted by them and ready for service they should be put under his command and stationed for the express purpose of protecting the town and harbour. In addition they were to be manned and victualled at the expense of the Government.
