Folios 283-284: enclosure with folios 281-282. Letter dated 27 August 1803 from Edward Pellew, HMS Tonnant off Ferrol to Admiral Cornwallis. States that HMS Seagull appeared at noon, steering for Coruna with the Lord Nelson East India ship which had been captured by the Bellone French privateer 13 days ago and engaged during the whole of the night before last by Captain Burke in a most gallant manner. After such a long continuance of fire from a ship with about 50 guns had to retreat and bend a new suit of sails etc. On renewing his attack discovered this squadron. The effect of Captain Burke's vigorous assaults are evident on the Lord Nelson. The comparative size and force of the ship he engqaged are manifest and "strike the beholder with the highest admiration" Have directed him to accompany the prize to England. Encloses Captain Burke's letter explaining fully his conduct.
Folios 285-286: enclosure with folios 281-282. Letter dated 27 August from Captain Henry Burke, HMS Seagull at sea to Captain Sir Edward Pellew, HMS Tonnant. On the Orders of Sir John Colpoys had seen a convoy safe into Cork and on return spoke with a Portuguese schooner who gave information of a French Privateer off Cape Clear. At 1pm on 25 August saw large sails and after a chase of five hours brought her to action which lasted until day light by when needed to disengage to secure masts etc. Kept her in sight so could again engage her when fell in with Captain Pellew. Sincerely regrets two valuable seamen were killed. Among wounded, sorry to say, Lieutenant William Davis whose conducted much indebted to as well as that of Lieutenant Watherston and Mr Ellis the Master. Cannot do sufficient justice to the merits of the whole of the Officers and ships company for their cool and determined courage. Encloses list of killed and wounded.
