Folios 279-280: Edward Pellew, HMS Tonnant, Cawsand Bay. Replying to enclosed letters (not with letter) states that Charles Lander came originally from an attorney's office, a youth, to write in the office of the ship and on promotion of his Clerk filled that situation. Was not entirely satisfied with his conduct and realised when he applied to become a Midshipman declined it. Believe he intended to use his time in the office as part of his qualification to pass for a Lieutenant. Has not heard from him until now. Returns enclosures.
