Description

Folios 233-234: Charles Dudley Pater, HMS Shannon, at Sea. Reply to letter dated 16 September 1801 and acquaints them that in consequence of the enclosed letter from the Purser of HMS Shannon, he had his permission to go on shore, to recover the money therein stated and rejoin the ship with all possible expedition. The ship having sailed immediately, prevented the possibility of his joining us there. - that he believes there has not been any opportunity for him to join the ship since that period, having had a Petty Officer and 4 men at Yarmouth, which had been sent in a vessel detained, near 3 weeks ago, with orders to join the ship with the first possible opportunity by applying to the Senior Officer there; neither of which has hither to joined the Ship.

Folios 235-236: enclosure with folios 233-234: Letter dated 26 August 1801 by James Hamilton Clewlow, [Purser], HMS Shannon, to Charles Dudley Pater, HMS Shannon. Reports having purchased on Shore at Sheerness a Quantity of necessaries , and paid for the same, but the person he purchased them from having delayed to send them on board yesterday according to agreement, He is apprehensive he shall lose the money paid, unless you will have the goodness to permit him to go on shore for an hour, & should the ship unavoidably sail before he can get off to the Nore, he shall not lose a moment in repairing to Yarmouth to take the first opportunity to join the ship.
