Description

Folios 207-208: Charles Dudley Pater, HMS Shannon, Leith Roads. Captain Robert O'Brien - HMS Alecto, having acquainted him , that in pursuance of an order from Admiral Sir Hyde Parker, he had directed HMS Rover, Hired Armed Lugger, after having accompanied HMS Alecto to this anchorage, to return and join Admiral Sir Hyde Parker with all possible expedition. But Lieutenant James John Duffy commanding the above Hired Lugger, having represented to Captain Robert O'Brien, the impracticability of his being able to perform that service, from the very defective state of his vessel, in consequence of which, He directed a Survey to be held on the State and Condition; a Copy of which report he encloses. He also acquaints you that the above Lugger will be ready for Sea by return of Post (Six Days).

Folio 209: enclosure with folios 207-208. Letter dated 24 March 1801 by Charles Dudley Pater, HMS Shannon, Leith Roads, to The Respective Captains of HMS Driver, HMS Inspector and HMS Alecto. It having been represented to him that HMS Rover - Hired Armed Lugger is not in a state to proceed to Sea, agreeable to the directions of Admiral Sir Hyde Parker (being ordered to join him with all possible expedition) You are therefore required and directed to take to your assistance your respective Carpenters and proceed to enquire into the state & condition of HMS Rover.[Verso] To Charles Dudley Pater, HMS Shannon, Report on the State and Condition of HMS Rover.
