Description

Folios 164-165: George Parker, HMS Santa Margarita, Falmouth Harbour. Informs that yesterday at 3 PM, 30 sail of Vessels were seen to the Southward of the Deaduion[?] by Lieutenant Cooke of HMS Santa Margarita from St Maws Hill (where he was sent by him to look out) supposing them to be HMS St Fiorenzo [HMS San Fiorenzo] with the Mediterranean Convoy, but the wind being SSE'ly, he could not get out of Falmouth with the two Brigs he had charge of, at half past 5 PM, the wind shifted when he weighed and made sail in a direction to fall in with them, at half past 10 he spoke to one of the vessels who informed him they were bound to Liverpool & Bristol and that the Mediterranean Fleet had sailed from Portland Roads, and he supposed were then off the Start, He has to hope he can join them at day light - at 2 AM, the wind shifted and then changed again and being in the Morning Four Leagues to Leeward of Falmouth Harbour he was obliged to bear up for Plymouth the vessels he had under Convoy not being able to beat to windward. He will inform Captain Patterson [Charles William Paterson] of his arrival who he supposes has bore up for Torbay.
