Description

Folios 137-138: George Palmer, Plympton. States having been nearly six years on shore he requests a ship. He complained top Lord Spencer that Mr Hawker the Purser was sent on shore on duty after his trial, was directed to come off the next day, as he was wanted on board; instead of obeying orders He got into a Coach and went to London where he remained eight days - His Lordships answer to him was, "that the Purser was recommended to him" - severely this was a hard case to an old Officer (that this violation of the rules of the Service was not noticed, nor did weigh in his favour if anything could have been against the relative to the Purser) who had not only been promoted by Lord Howe & Lord Kepple, but always stood high until the ungrateful & Malicious misrepresentations of the Officers of HMS Lion, the grand instrument of them, went mad & died soon afterwards. Having lost all chance hitherto, in a French, Dutch & Spanish War, and being so long on half pay has reduced him to poverty, his Father leaving nearly all he had to his Sister who lived with him many years - He is induced, from the old acquaintance you had with his late Father to hope you will be pleased to speak to Lord St Vincent in his behalf for Employment. He frequently asked Lord Spencer if anything stood against him, and his Lordship's answer repeatedly was, no.
