Description

Folios 246-247: Charles Pelly, HMS Mercury, Spithead. He reports why at the request of James Gambier, Consul General, Lisbon, he did not escort the convoy to England as ordered. He encloses copies of the letters he received. He says that as the convoy was not ready he did not want his ship to be idle.

Folios 248-249: enclosed with folios 246-247. Letter dated 3 February 1800 by James Gambier, Consul General, Lisbon to Pelly. He informs Charles Pelly that a convoy will not be ready before March. He tells him that he has a large amount of dollars awaiting transport to England and letters from the Treasury asking for this to occur.

Folios 250-251: enclosed with folios 246-247. Letter dated 5 Februay 1800 by James Gambier, Consul General, Lisbon, to Pelly With the agreement of Charles Pelly he will load all the treasure in his possession on HMS Mercury. There are 20 soldiers with their families needing transport to England. They are from the Queens and 54th Regiment and were captured by the Brest fleet. He asks if they can also be taken to England.

Folios 252-253: enclosed with folios 246-247. Letter dated 8 February 1800 by James Gambier, Consul General, Lisbon, to Pelly He thanks Charles Pelly for his help. He asks him to take the mail from the merchants and the dispatches from Lord Robert Fitzgerald.
