Folios 234-235: William Allen Proby, HMS Danae. Chubb, the late Carpenter of HMS Danae is still on board. His reason for pressing for the appointment of another Carpenter was that the ship is not safe without one and Chubb is not fit to be entrusted with the stores, but if he takes them ouit of his charge before he is superceded it would be impossible to prevent embezzlement. His motive in allowing Chubb to avoid a Court Martial by resigning was merely a motive of humanity so that knowledge of his disgrace would be minimised and he might have a chance to redeeem himself in future.
