Description (What the record is about)
-
Folios 205-206: Charles Papps Price, HMS Badger, Isles St Marcou. The Charming Molly cutter, said to be ordered for service, has not appeared. He needs 1 or 2 tenders of superior force to those now in service as he has to communciate with the coast to the west of Cape La Hague, and they are liable to be met by cruisers from St Maloes. He is told that the owner of the Charming Molly has a tender at Portsmouth named the Earl Spencer which is fitted for immediate service. The convoys are so frequent between Cherbourg and Havre that their correspondence is interrupted. They pass in the day and anchor at Issigney. When they see no gun brigs or cruisers they go along the coast at night and their gun brigs are too formidable for either of the tenders. When HMS Grappler was under his orders the convoys were checked considerably. The last dispatches from the Continent were thrown into the sea due to the actions of one of the convoys. The Messengers and Officers have applied to Mr Windham to request some force equal to their convoys. Lieutenant Chilcot says HMS Grand Falkener [Falconer] needs 14 to 21 days of repairs but he cannot spare her at present without a replacement. He expects hostages will be sent there for security and therefore asks for another subaltern Marine Officer for HMS Badger as he will need a stronger guard. He also hopes their complement of Marines will be completed. He will order the Corporal and 4 invalids belonging to Major General Napier's company to Alderney tomorrow and as the Commander in Chief has told him that General Dalrymple is directed to replace them, he will send the Polly lugboat there for them
