Description

Folios 188-189: Charles Papps Price, HMS Badger, Isles St Marcou. Encloses a certificate from the Surgeons of HMS Badger and HMS Sandfly of the examination of Lieutenant Joseph Riddle, commanding HMS Rose hired tender. For the last year he has acted very inconsistently and the Master and men have often complained about his deranged state. On 4 [August 1799] when sent to cover their boats which were harrassing the enemy's convoy between Cape Barfleur and Isigney, he acted so inconsistently that the boats under Lieutenant Thomas might have been cut off from the isalnds. He believes he is very unfit to protect their boats and he hopes their Lordships will approve of removing him from the present srevice.

Folio 191: enclosure with folios 188-189. Certificate dated 5 August 1799 by N Walker, Surgeon, HMS Badger and James Rob, Surgeon HMS Sandfly, given on board HMS Rose cutter. They have examined the state of health of Lieutenant Joseph Riddle, Commander of HMS Rose cutter. He is afflicted with chronic rheumatism and extreme debility which render him incapable of performing his professional duty.
