Description

Folios 187-188: Charles Papps Price, HMS Badger, Isles St Marcou. On 1 [August 1799] HMS Grand Falkener [Falconer] was stopped from doing her service off Point Pierce by 3 row boats which the Republicans have stationed there as guard boats. On 7 [August 1799] thinking they were at anchor between the 2 batteries under Grand Camp, he sent their boats armed under Midshipman Nash of HMS Badger to have them sent out if they were there. In the morning Mr Nash returned with the Fortunee sloop, Master Francois Fortant, the St Pierre sloop, Master Louis Bertot belonging to Grand Camp and the Amitie lug boat belonging to Honfleur. Neither the guard at Fort Maisey nor the guard on the East side of the bay fired their first gun before the boats were out of range. He believes that the few men he commands would attempt anything he thinks prudent for them to attemnpt. They are unable to stop the convoys as they are protected by 2 or 3 gun brigs. If 2 of the schooners could be spared to cruise betweon Cape Barfleur and the Calavadoes he thinks they could stop the communication. He has sent HMS Champion to Portsmouth for stores for the Engineer.
