Folios 185-186: Henry Paulet, HMS Defence, Chatham. Acknowledges the letter expressing the Admiralty's disappointment with his dealings with the Sick and Wounded Board over the replacement of Surgeon Joseph Cullerne, encloses several letters which will explain the full facts of the case. He feels that the Board acted with disrespect toward him and Mr Cullerne, particularly given that officer's service at the Battle of the Nile.
Folio 187: enclosed with folios 185-186. Copy of a letter dated 21 October 1799 from George Blane, the Office for Sick and Wounded Seamen, to the commander of HMS Defence, notifying him that Surgeon Joseph Cullerne is being superceded by James Turkington.
Folio 188: enclosed with folios 185-186. Copy of a letter dated 30 October 1799 from George Blane, the Office for Sick and Wounded Seamen, to Captain Lord Henry Paulet. They cannot allow Surgeon George Cullerne to continue on HMS Defence as they have already appointed another Surgeon to supercede him.
Folios 189-190: enclosed with folios 185-186. Copy of a letter, not dated, from Captain Henry Paulet, HMS Defence, to the Commissioners for Sick and Wounded. He was very surprised to be notified that Surgeon Joseph Cullerne was being superceded, feels this is unjust to an officer who served with distinction at the Battle of the Nile and asks the Board to allow him to remain in the ship.
Folios 190-191: enclosed with folios 185-186. Copy of a letter dated 25 September 1799 from James Johnston and Gilbert Blane, the Office for Sick and Wounded Seamen, to Captain Lord Henry Paulet, HMS Defence, Chatham. Acknowledge the Captain's letter concerning Surgeon Joseph Cullerne and the quantity of Necessaries supplied to the ship. They are keen to detect any fraud in the tradesmen supplying the Navy.
Folios 191-192: enclosed with folios 185-186. Copy of a letter dated 23 September 1799 from Captain Henry Paulet, HMS Defence, Chatham, to the Commissioners of the Sick and Hurt Office. Despite what the Board's letter to Surgeon Joseph Cullerne says, feels that Mr Cullerne acted entirely properly. Having examined samples of the Necessaries, he feels that what the Surgeon procured at Gibraltar was of better quality than the supplies from the Board. He has now taken the matter up with Admiral Lord Keith.
