Folios 197-198: Horace Pine, HMS Scorpion, Sheerness. Encloses a list with descriptions of the men who deserted HMS Scorpion on 14 November 1797, within five miles of Elsinore Road. They took a jolly boat which was found on the Swedish Coast and the Navy Agent Mr Belfour recovered her, paying a salvage. He reports they were seen on the road to Gothenburg and so sent their descriptions to the Consul in order to recover the men. Enclosed are the responses to this request.
Folio 199: enclosure with folios 197-198. Letter dated 18 November 1797 from John Smith. States the runaways have not yet made an appearance and he has made arrangements for their arrest as soon as they appear.
Folios 200-201: enclosure with folios 197-198. Letter dated 18 November 1797 from John Smith. States he has heard nothing of the deserters and if they had taken this route he would have been informed of their appearance. Surmises they may have boarded merchantmen in the outer harbour. Assures him that every possible effort will be made to recover these men. States that during the summer they recovered 9 deserters from HMS Nautilus on board an American Ship. States Captain Wray put to sea without gunpowder and advises he has been ordered to deliver it to the Commander of any of His Majesty's Ships that may enter the port.
Folios 202-203: enclosure with folios 197-198: Form, undated, listing deserters. List of 6 men form HMS Scorpion. They are: William Griffiths; John Dilton; David Barry; James Kelly; James Way; and John Taplin. All are Able Seaman, apart from James Kelly who is a Boatswain's Mate. Provides ages and descriptions.
