Description

Folios 95-96: John Philips, First Lieutenant, HMS Ardent, Yarmouth Roads. Reports his arrival and that he took commission of the ship upon the death of her Captain, Richard Rundle Burgess, who was killed on 11 October 1797 [Battle of Camperdown], ten minutes after the action commenced. Encloses a list of the killed and wounded [item not present] and a report on the ships defects. Adds that Sir Thomas Byard, HMS Bedford assisted his ship into the Roads and the carpenters made repairs to the remaining masts and bowsprit.

Folio 97: enclosure with folios 95-96. Admiralty note annotated Medal Committee 17 October 1797 [no additional information].

Folio 98: enclosure with folios 95-96. Defect report, undated, for HMS Ardent under the command of Lieutenant John Philips. Signed by Richard Few, Gunner and Lieutenant John Philips.

Folio 99: enclosure with folios 95-96. Defect reports, undated, for HMS Ardent. Signed by Lieutenant John Philips.
