Folios 161-162: Thomas Parr, HMS Standard, Yarmouth Roads. Informs that he left Yarmouth Roads in HMS Standard in Company with Admiral Adam Duncan and his Fleet, except for HMS Nassau & HMS Montague on Saturday Morning; after having had great trouble to prevail on the People to go to Sae, they aledging they had no pay, & that His Majesty's Pardon didi not extend to them, the last he got the better of, but they had no Tobacco or Soap no cloths or Money. Desirious of getting them to Sea the Purser purchased Tobacco & he [Thomas Parr] got 400 casks of Soap and they promised to sail whenever the Admiral made the Signal, about the same evening the Signal was made to anchor where all the Fleet anchored off Lowstoff & in sight of the Ships in Yarmouth Roads, where we lay till the evening following when at 7 the Admiral made the Signal to weigh, HMS Lion immediatly sent a Boat toward us, on perceiving her coming & suspecting her errand, he made Sail & run from her HMS Lion then hauled toward us; The Ships Company seeing this all run aft & insisted on shortning Sails. There Lordship's wiil he is sure do him the justice to suppose every argument in his power was made use of to dissuade them from so rash an Act but all was in vain and he was reduced to the mortyfying necessity of submitting to them. Captain Edmund Crawley, when near us hailed and told him rge Ships Company of HMS Lion wanted to speak with those of HMS Standard and a Boat was sent onboard. The event of the consultation was to return to Yarmouth Roads at Day light in the Morning and he was to inform their Lordship's that they would not sail until they were paid the Wages due to them up to six months and His Majesty's Full Pardonobtained for their conduct on this occassion. That this their determination and they would not swerve from it; But should the Dutch Fleet come to Sea, they would imediatly put to Sea, tho' the Commissioner was alongside to pat them. The anxiety he has under gone for the last three weeks, is more than he can describe, the few Royal Marines were reduced to a stats of inactavity through fear, and joined the Seamen, who had two days ago forced him to put Captain Mackintosh out of the ship who was on all occassions an active & good Royal Marines Officer. To him and the Officers they are perfectly respectfull; and he cannot do Mr Buller the First Lieutenant sufficient justice for his unparralled good conduct during the many disquietudes we have had to encounter with & on all other occassions. Should the men be paid & a Pardon obtained, he has no doubt. but they will go to Sea and behave themselves as they ought to do without it, he fears every persuasion will be useless for they are made to believe that there is not money in the Country to pay them and that they will never get it.
