Description

Folios 228-233: Edward Pellew. Transmitted with letter of March 23 1795. Information from various sources about conditions in France. He chased the Fame American Captain Hawkes who had been sent into Brest by Rear Admiral Neilly's division. Names and details of French numerous ships in Brest and Frenchmen. The Americans report on the difficult conditions in France and that [Jean Baptiste] Charrette [Royalist leader of the Peasant uprising in the Vendee] had surrendered [to the revolutionary forces]. Reports of Bretons marching on Brest. No Seamen are available for the coastal trade. English prisoners, taken on as Americans, report on the state of ships at Brest. Details of the prisons. Reports of a secret expedition collecting troops from La Rochefort. Accounts of the French ships refusing to obey their Admiral. Reports of events in La Vendee and the execution of Carrier [ December 1794. He was a Revolutionary who massacred 4000 in Vendee] which Charette considered as proof of the sincerity of the Convention which was why they surrendered. Discussion of religion. They can purchase churches back from the Convention and have their own clergy. The Post is arriving without interference from La Vendee.
