Folios 258-259: Israel Pellew, HMS Squirrel, Margate Roads. He reports that Lieutenant John Childs boarded the Maria and Eliza, from Norfolk in Virginia. Mungor Machin, Master, told him that he had met with a squadron of French ships of the line. Later, Lieutenant Childs boarded the Friendship from Jamaica. George Gowland, Master, told him that he had also seen the French ships.
