Description

Folio 275: Commodore Sir Edward William Campbell Rich Owen, HMS Saint Lawrence, Kingston. States the great distance at which HMS Scorpion and HMS Tigress Gun Vessels are from this place will not allow of hs personal examination of them in conjunction with the Commissioners. He has therefore ordered Captain William Fitzwilliam Owen in conjunction with the Officers attached to him, and Officers of the Naval Yard, to survey and value them on his arrival on Lake Huron and to send him his reports.

Folios 276-277: enclosure with folio 275. Letter dated 21 June 1815 by Commodore Sir Edward William Campbell Rich Owen, HMS Saint Lawrence, Kingston, to William Fitzwilliam Owen, Royal Navy as a Particular Service. Whereas the Admiralty has by their letter dated 22 March 1815 directed the [HMS?] Tigress and the [HMS?] Scorpion (now called HMS Caufiauce and HMS Surprize [HMS Surprise]) Gun vessels captured from the Americans on Lake Huron which had been purchased by the Army for the Navy at an exhorbitant rate[?] shall be revalued. Orders with the assistance of Mr Gawthorp the Surveying Master and Mr Harriss [Christopher Atwell Harris ?] the Master of HMS Prince Regent with Mr Edmund Burtface Deputy Naval Storekeeper and Mr Moore the Deputy Master Shipwright at Skeets Creak whose order from Commissiary Sir Robert Hall for that purpose to value HMS Caufiauce now lay off Fort Erie as well as the fixtures and stores on her capture. And value HMS Surprize when you fall in with her.
