Folios 248-249: Robert O'Brien, Regulating Captain, Limerick. States that whilst proceeding from Galway to the Island of Arran on 26 May on HMS Landrail met a number of boats off the Islands and in their confusion to avoid us and fault on the part of the man at the helm of the Landrail had misfortune to come in contact with one of them which immediately filled and sank. With difficulty saved two men from the brig. She was the property of a very fine man, who by his exertions in her maintained a numerous family. Under circumstances felt it would be injustice not to have paid him his reasonable demand of 30 guineas for the loss of the boat, fish and materials. Requests to know if can include in his accounts. Although the event was almost unavoidable the fault was ours and occured in the execution of Admiralty orders.
