Description

Folios 445-446: Edward William Campbell Rich Owen, HMS Clyde, the Downs. Replies to the letter from Mr. [Dauous?] concerning John Peavey. The latter was impressed as a consequence of the order to impress those with Protection. Nearly 100 men have been brought on board with this practice. Peavey accepted the offer of volunteering for the service on the Clyde. Since then he has discharged the duty of Purser's Steward. Having learnt his friends were applying for his discharge, he refused his bounty. Most of the impressed men were put on the Zealand.

Folios 447-448: enclosure with folios 445-446. Letter not dated by ? to the Admiralty. John Peavey, Cooper and Steward on the [Union?] East Indiaman under CaptainGalliard was impressed and taken on board HMS Clyde under Commadore Owen on 22nd July having Admitalty Protection. His widowed Mother, two brothers and a sister depend on him for support. He served apprenticeship in HM's Victualling Office at Deptford where his father also worked for 7 years until he had a paralytic stroke and lost the use of one side for 5 years. Lord Westmorland has spoken to Lord Mulgrave and endoses John Peavey's discharge.
