Folios 431-432: Edward William Campbell Rich Owen, HMS Clyde, the Downs. In the past, a certain number of troops were allowed to volunteer for the Marines. J. W. [Jea?] serving on the Clyde volunteered from the 97th Regiment in November 1795. He was embarked in the Prince George from December '95 till March 1796, then in HMS Eltrusco till August 1798, then in the Penelope from November 1790 till June 1802 then discharged because of the reduction at the Peace. He belonged to the Colonel's Company in the 97th and the 72nd of the Marines of the Portsmouth division. This man has been claiming at a higher rate of pay for some while. There is some difficulty finding his name at the Portsmouth division, perhaps because of a mis-spelling. He asks for proper extracts of this man's service in ships around the Portsmouth division and an order to apply to the Post Office for the certificate of his service in the 97th Regiment.
