Folios 343-344: Edward William Campbell Rich Owen, HMS Clyde, Walmer Road. Responds to the letter of 30th April concerning the damage by the violent storms of 18th February. He requests that the Clyde's Carpenter to receive 30 shillings per day. He reports that the repairs were carried out by the Articifiers of his own Squadron and that the Carpenter of HMS Edgar who was granted 30 shillings per day in the Downs was at that time unavailable at Spithead. Recalling that the Rendezvous is 3 miles from the Flag ship and considering weather and tides etc., the Captain suggests it is impossible for the Rendezvous to superintend and suggests this is carried out by the Carpenter of the Flagship. He has made a claim on behalf of the Carpenter of the Clyde for repairs on other damaged vessels and managed the best use of Carpenter and men without resorting to assistance from the distant Downs. Responding to the order of 28 October 1806, caulking was carried out on several vessels in the Squadron at his station and therefore unnecessary for this to be carried out at the Nore. The Captain questions the payment given being the rate for common Artificiers rather than 3 shillings for work properly performed.
