Description

Folios 330-331: Edward William Campbell Rich Owen, HMS Clyde, Walmer Road. He is sending a model to explain the mode of fitting and working on an iron yoke fitted to the rudder head of the Clyde. Several captains have wished to obtain this, but the Dockyards have neither a plan nor dimensions. The yoke is permanently in place and there is no longer a requirement for preparation apart from hooking the tackle. This might also be applied to a battle ship. He mentions the wheel supporters, tiller hole and maintain the use of after gun. The Captain mentions an accident on the Immortalité that would have been avoided if this practice was in use and a technique for the use of the compass during battle under heavy smoke. He wishes to send details of the construction for such a compass.

Folio 332: enclosure with folios 330-331. Part of a document dated 30th March by the Admiralty to unknown. The response to Captain Owen's invention for a compass design is approved and proposes that this is sent to Master Watkins for inspection.
