Folios 231-232: Edward William Owen, HMS Clyde, Walmer Road. It was some time ago he submitted a proposal to the Commander in Chief for the Admiralty for brass howitzers to be fitted on gun carriages on 2 or 3 ships. At that time HMS Bold at Sheerness was to be fitted with 8 such howitzers, but was ordered away. This month the Bold is due to have these fitted on Mr. Congreve's carriages as was the Clyde, but the Captain has been ordered back to his station. He suggests that as an experiment, one or two of the gunships has these howitzers mounted of strengthened common gun carriages instead of their long guns. He states his case of the effectiveness in detail.
