Folios 182-183: Edward William Owen, HMS Clyde, Dungeness. He recommends Mr Thomas Pickering Clarke as Sub-Lieutenant in HMS Archer or Intelligent. Clarke has served under him on HM Nemesis, Immortalite and Clyde. He has served in Boats and with Lieutenant Payne in the Barge last September narrowly escaped a musket shot which cut thorough his pantaloons. The Captain encloses a letter from Mr. Sydney Smith who commanded at that occasion. Mr. William Tapper is mentioned in that letter.
Folios 184-185: enclosure with folios 182-183. Letter dated 1 October 1805 by Edward William Owen, HMS Immortalite, Boulogne to Sir William Sydney Smith. Captain Secombe had been ordered with Lieutenant Payne to engage with the enemy. William Lathan was severely wounded and Mr. William Tapper, Master's Mate is highly praised. He has passed his Lieutenant's examination.
