Description

Folios 157-158: Edward William Owen, HMS Clyde, off Boulogne. Responds to the enquiry concerning James Askew. Various applications have been made for his discharge. He has served for 6 months and behaved with strict propriety, but it would be good not to give him leave of absence. Papers can be transmitted to him when next in the Downs or friends can supply an address.

He you man was never at sea but bound as a wherry man from Ipswich to Harwich for 2 or 3 years which was considered to be a protection from impress. Not only is he an Apprentice, but also heir by law to a considerable amount. His inheritance has been sold but the business cannot be accomplished unless he comes to sign the conveyance. His Mother will pray for Viscount Howick and all freeholders in Suffolk. A character reference may be given by Captain Owen. Security is offered by Sir Andrew Hammond who knows Dr. Carter.
