Description

Folios 132-133: Edward William Owen, HMS Clyde, Downs Following an order from Lord Keith he has called on the Commander of the Fearless and the Lieutenant of the Dover Rendezvous for the particulars of the case of Frederic Williams alias James Power and encloses the relevant reports.

Folios 134-135: enclosure with folios 132-133. Letter dated 8 May 1806 by J. Walker, Dover to Commodore Owen, Mr. Walker replied that Frederic Williams asked him to obtain his wages and produced the enclosed indenture to prove he was a British subject and had neither returned to his ship nor the Rendezvous who has impressed him from the Master of the Two Generals ship. The latter said the man went by the name James Power and on board by another name.

Folios 136-137: enclosure with folios 132-133. Indenture dated 3 September 1739 witnessed and signed by [ William Brown and Robert Burnside?] for James Power and Joseph [Mellanby?] Master of Whitby to Captain Owen. The indenture details include James Power was the son of Thomas Power of Waterford, apprentices contact and payments.

Folio 138: enclosure with folios 132-133. Letter dated 10 May 1806 by Frederick Williams, Dungeness to Lord Keith, Admiral of the White, the Downs. He states he was impressed on 21st April at Dover from the American ship the Two Generals of Norfolk Alexander Cunningham Master. On being impressed he was sent on board HMS Fearless and has made several applications to his Commander for his wages, a balance of some fifty five dollars, but was told the ship was no longer at Dover.

Folio 140: enclosure with folios 132-133. Letter dated 15 May 1806 by Lord Keith to the Admiralty. He sends an application of Frederick Wiliams of HMS Fearless regarding wages owed to him from an American ship the Two Generals in order Captain Owen to make enquiries.

Folios 141-142: enclosure with folios 132-133. Letter dated 23 May 1806 from Mr. J. Walker, Dover to Captain Owen. He states that James Power was impressed on 21st April 1806 and the Master refuses to pay his wages having been absent for three days. The ship is still in Dover and it is hoped that Captain Owen's superior position may persuade the Master to comply.

Folios 143-144: enclosure with folios 132-133. Letter dated 16 May 1806 by Lieutenant J. Williams, HMS Fearless, Walmer Roads to Commodore Owen, HMS Clyde. He stated that Mr. Williams was sent on board by the Officer of the Rendezvous at Dover. The Master of the American ship was asked for the wages, but not finding him named in the articles and stated the man had left the ship and wanted nothing more to do with the business.
