Description

Folios 366-367: John Acworth Omanney, HMS Isis, Spithead. He is sending a statement from Nathaniel Westcott who was impressed at St John's as a result of the information povided by the crew of the ship he was serving on.

Folio 368: enclosure with folios 366-367 undated, signed by Nataniel Westcott. He was appointed Boatswain of HMS Rattlesnake, out of HMS Lancaster, in 1801. He was invalided at Madras in August 1803 and returned to Plymouth in an Indiaman, when the Captain of that ship reported him to the Commissioner, and to the Port Admiral. Nataniel Wrestcot applied to the Commissioners in London and when he did not get a reply, he entered himself on HMS Pallas. On arrival at Portsmouth he was given a Boatswain's warrant for HMS Sardine, from which he transferred to HMS Lapwing at Cork, and travelled on a merchant ship bound for Liverpool. At Liverpool he boarded a Merchant ship bound for Waterford which was cast away and he was picked up by a Welsh ship bound for Liverpool where he arrived for a second time. He applied to the Commissioners at Portsmouth but when no answer came, through poverty, he joined a merchant ship bound for Newfoundland in the hope of joining a Navy ship there, but where he was impressed and put onboard HMS Isis.
