Description

Folios 304-305: Edward William Campbell Rich Owen, HMS Immortalité, the Downs. Reports his arrival, encloses a copy of his letter to Admiral Lord Keith. Postscript. Encloses [not present] his weekly accounts.

Folios 306-307: enclosed with folios 304-305. Letter dated 9 June 1803 from Captain Edward William Campbell Rich Owen, HMS Immortalité, off Dungeness, to Admiral Lord Keith. Reports that since his last letter he has not captured any vessels, but examined a fishing boat off St Valery en Caux and later met the Thames of New York, on passage from Le Havre to St Petersburg with a cargo of wine which supposedly was Russian but had been shipped by a French merchant, some of it for the Emperor of Russia. He has sent the vessel in for the opinion of the His Majesty's Advocate. He went to the Downs for water and to fresh provisions, as scurvy had begun to appear among his crew. HMS Jalouse has detained two neutral vessels, but he does not yet have a full report from Commander Christopher Strachey. Encloses [not present] a copy of his journal. So far there is no sign of privateers at either Dieppe or Boulogne.
