Description

Folios 269-270: Edward William Campbell Rich Owen, HMS Immortalité, Long Reach. Reports that George Toogood was impressed from a vessel in the River Thames and admits that he had been employed on her for more than a year. Thomas Brown, from his age and appearance, seems to have used the sea before the date of his indentures.

Folios 271-272: enclosed with folios 269-270. Undated petition from John Chambers, Master of the Governor Myers of London, to the Admiralty. Seeks the discharge of Thomas Brown, apprentice to the ship's owner Thomas Oldfield, who was impressed by a party from HMS Immortalité. Encloses [not present] his indenture.

Folio 273: enclosed with folios 274-275. Affidavit dated 11 May 1803 and sworn by George Love of King Street, Saint George, Middlesex, victualler, before Justice of the Peace Richard Foley at the Public Office, Shadwell. Swears that he has known George Toogood, recently impressed into HMS Immortalité, for 20 years and that he never was at sea or employed on the River Thames.

Folios 274-275: enclosed with folios 269-270. Petition dated 11 May 1803 from George Love to the Admiralty. Seeks the discharge of George Toogood who is aboard HMS Immortalité in Long Reach, notes that he was impressed once before and discharged once Love swore an affidavit that he was a landsman.
