Folios 322-323: Terence O'Neil, Poole. Replying to Admiralty letter of 31 April, which advised that an impressed man, Thomas Reid, has been found unfit for service and directing him to be more careful when he raises men. In response he encloses copies of Admiralty letters of 30, 2, and 13 April on this subject and says he has strictly complied with them. Also a copy of his own letter re Thomas Allison, another impressed man who has since been discharged, but whose complaint he says was 'nothing' - he had previously been discharged for chronic rheumatism, while Thomas Reid passes himself off as deaf. Adds that another man, 'a stout young landman', has been discharged because he has fits - but O'Neil says if he had one it would have been the first and last time he suffered so and that he is by trade a smuggler, and he has ordered him to be made one of the gang, as he is a really serviceable man. Assures them that he and his surgeon, Mr West, will attempt to ensure no further complaints occur.
Folio 324: enclosed with folios 322-323. Note to the Commissioners of the Navy, remitting £1.15s 6d to the Secretary, as he knows nothing of the [unnamed] man's whereabouts and is sure he will not reappear, as his complaint is 'a made one'.
Folio 325: enclosed with folios 322-323. Copies of 3 short letters. 1] from Evan Nepean to Captain O'Neil, 30 March 1803, acknowledging his letter of 29 March and information on men raised, and saying that due to an erasure and apparent alteration in the ticket for Thomas Reid he is to detain him for the service. 2] from William Marsden to O'Neil, 2 April, saying that because of erasures in the indenture enclosed he is to pay no attention to it, and returning the pension ticket for Thomas Reid. 3] from William Marsden, 13 April, advising that in employing the services of a surgeon when examining new raised men he is to prefer one employed under the Sick and Wounded Board, or failing that one who has served aboard HM ships and knows the 'habits and practices' of seamen better than other surgeons.
