Description

Folios 315-316: Terence O'Neil, Poole. Sending his returns and saying there are some men he has detained at the instigation of local merchants, because they were not in possession of their protections. Also noting that he has now seen their Lordships' letter from the attorney Mr Dunford, regarding 'the unfortunate case of Mr Neville', and stating that various 'inflammatory' reports were about and would bring the Service into disrepute. There is a rumour that the man wounded was not properly treated by the surgeon at Swanage, he not being capable - which it was necessary to assess in case any man died. For the good name of the Service therefore he has called in the town surgeons (2 of them volunteers), all men of high standing in the profession, to give every assistance. Also, he has felt he can rely on the opinion of Mr George Garratt, the assisting surgeon of the 14th Light Dragoons, who could be both impartial and outspoken, which must help Mr Neville's cause.

Folio 317: enclosed with folios 315-316. Letter dated 23 April 1803 by O'Neill, Rendezvous Poole, asking for permission from John Lander, the Collector of Customs for Poole, to use his cutter to receive on board the volunteers and impressed men, and take them to Portsmouth, for the ship bearing Admiral Lord Gardner's flag or other of HM ships at Spithead.
