Folios 242-243: Robert Dudley Oliver, HMS Melpomene, Spithead. Replying to Admiralty query of 21 December that he would certainly not have thought it necessary to come from St Helens to Spithead simply to get a new bumpkin, but had been directed to Spithead by orders from Lord Keith to Captain Gower - he supposes to have their defects made good - and while there he thought it a good opportunity to have the ship's bottom cleaned as it would not take more than one tide.
